"We were part of the first wave. We were no more on the beach then the right front drive of our tractor was hit by a mortar. Another one of our tractors pulled our tractor off the beach and out of fire. Our tractor would then drift back into the coral reef where we were then under fire. As the tractors went back and forth to the ship bringing men they would pull our damaged tractor back out past the coral reef. This went on all day long, until later that evening when either a tractor or navy boat picked us up and returned us to the ship. We stayed on the ship that night and the next morning we were taken back to the beach."

"There are a lot of memories of Peleliu....most of them are unpleasant, but that is war. My upper most thoughts are of the many good men we lost there, mixed with a feeling of pride in the Marine 1st Division for completing the job against nearly impossible conditions. Aside from the conflict, I remember the intense heat, thirst, and the most ungodly smell I have ever experienced! Those type experiences don't exist on film, but they are still very real in my memory."
